BC Network for Compassionate Communication

Help Us Plant Seeds For Change

Making the world a compassionate place through nonviolent communication.

About NVC

By Marshall B. Rosenberg, Ph.D., adapted from Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life

“I believe compassion is our natural state of being — that it’s natural to feel joy in giving and receiving from the heart. Accordingly, for most of my life I’ve been preoccupied with two questions: What happens to disconnect us from our compassionate nature, leading us to behave violently or exploitatively? And conversely, what empowers some to stay connected to our compassionate nature even under the worst circumstances?

While studying the factors that affect our ability to stay compassionate, I was struck by the crucial role that language can play. While we may not consider the way we talk to be ‘violent,’ words often lead to hurt and pain toward ourselves or to others.”
